Frequently Asked Questions - JustSlides.com

What sets JustSlides.com apart from the dozens of companies offering slide scanning services?

We believe there are six main differences:

How do I order?

1)  Fill out order form completely.  If you have any questions, call us toll free at (866) 331-3456

2)  Put your slides in chronological order if desired.  For carousels and cartridges, please number sequentially.  We will also follow the individual slide sequence within the carousel or cartridge.  For loose slides, please put them in the order that you want and secure them with several rubber bands in bundles of no more than 50 slides.  Write a numerical sequence on each bundle, and also write the words “start” and “end” on each bundle-end and we will follow that sequence for each bundle.

3)  If desired, write brief titles or date range (15 characters or less) on each carousel or slide bundle, or on the back of your order form with numbers corresponding to the carousel, cartridge or bundle numbers.

4)  Securely box both the slides and the order form

5)  Ship via UPS, or another carrier with the ability to track a shipment, to the following address:

6)  When the slide transfer is completed and we are ready to ship back to you, we will charge your credit card account using the number you provide us on your order form.  We will also send you an email (through UPS) confirming your order has been shipped, along with a tracking number.

Where are you located?

We are located in Tyler, Texas at 410 W SW Loop 323, Suite D.  Since 2002, we have operated two retail locations in Tyler and Longview, Texas operating under the name DVD Memories, where we provide full video production services, as well as media transfer services for both local and internet customers.  We are a real business, with real retail locations, and normal operating hours.  We are NOT a home based business, hobby or second job.

How do your prices compare to competitors?

For slides transferred to DVD-Video (the most popular form of transfer, which will autoplay on your living room DVD player) we do not know of another company offering this service lower than 29 cents per slide.  In fact, we are not aware of another company even offering this method of transfer, so if you know of one, please let us know!

For slides scanned to DVD or CD, the following chart shows the starting prices of our major competitors for scans at 4000dpi, with correction of exposure, color and dust and scratches.  Prices as of February 2006.

                                                            Competitor                                      Price                                Notes

DMP                                         89 cents                   No archiving included

SS/LD                                        95 cents                   can go as high as $2.28

                                                                BP                                              99 cents

                                                                CFS                                            99 cents

                                                                IP                                                99 cents

We are also aware of several companies offering slide scanning services at $2.00 per slide, but they are not major competitors (mainly due to their high prices).

How does your quality compare to competitors?

Most companies offering slide scanning use Nikon Coolscan film and slide scanners, and so do we.  In the hands of experienced technicians, there should be no major quality differences among companies offering this service.  While it is tempting to want to say that our competitors do a bad job, the fact is that the majority of slide scanning companies are reputable and produce a fine product.

How about customer service?

We keep normal business hours, 9am to 6pm CDT Monday through Friday.  You can call us toll-free during business hours at 1-866-331-3456 (331-FILM).  In addition, you can contact us via email at service@justslides.com and we will respond as quickly as we can.  We make a living by providing superior customer service, and don't plan on changing that anytime soon.  We are full members of both our local Better Business Bureau chapter, as well as nationally through BBB Online.

In what file format will my scanned slides be saved?

Our default file format is JPEG.  If you want a different format, please indicate which one on your order form and we will save your slide scans in the requested format.

What is your turnaround time?

Except for the largest orders, we normally complete transfers in six business days or less once we receive them.  Including your shipping time to us, and our return shipping time, it takes about two weeks from the time you ship your order until the time you get it back.

What type of equipment do you use?

For slide scans, we use professional Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 machines.  For slides transferred to DVD-Video, we use Elmo professional slide transfer equipment.

How much do extra copies of my DVD or CD cost?

Additional DVDs are $10 each.  Additional CDs (scans only) are $5 each.

Can you transfer slides to VHS tape?

We do have the ability to transfer slides (DVD-Video transfer method only) to a VHS tape, however, we encourage you to order DVDs due to several factors, including longevity, coming obsolescence of VHS, durability, etc.

Will your DVD play in my DVD player?

For slide scans saved on DVD, the data DVD is not designed to play on your DVD player.  If you want to view your slides on a DVD player, you should order the DVD-Video method of transfer.  These DVD-R discs will play on over 95% of DVD players in existence.  In the event that your DVD player will not play a DVD-R disc, we offer free re-formatting to another disc format that will work in your player.  We stand behind all of our DVDs.

My slides are old, how do I know they are still good?

The vast majority of slides are in transferable condition.  If you can see an image when you hold the slide up to a light, and the slide is in good physical condition (the image portion is not coming apart from the paper frame), then we should be able to transfer it.

My slides are damaged.  Can they be transferred?

It depends.  If the image itself is damaged/faded/color shifted/stained, we can still most likely do a transfer.  For slides transferred to DVD-Video, we do not do any image correction other than exposure correction, so you will see the damage on the slide images when you view your slides.  For slide scanning, we include scratch and dust removal, color correction, and exposure correction, but it can't cure all defects.

If the slide is physically separating, we cannot do transfers to DVD-Video.  In addition, we will charge an additional $1 per slide because of the extra time it will take to scan the slides on a flatbed scanner.

What is your minimum order size?

Our minimum order size is $25.

What are the return shipping charges?

We will add $10 shipping charges for all orders under $150.

Can I try out your services before I commit to a large order?

Of course you can.  Send in enough slides to hit the $25 minimum order size, and we are certain you will be pleased enough to become one of our many repeat customers.

What other services do you provide online?

We also operate Just8mm.com, one of the leading 8mm and Super 8 film transfer companies in the country.
